17:45

Martine Ettori 33 years working at Hôpital Saint-Louis (Paris X). Between management agendas, consultations with patients and writing reports ..., the medical and social worker, passionate and enthusiastic, explains his job !

Missions / Define post

Natacha Kalligo of Martine as medical and social worker, what are your main tasks within the Saint-Louis Hospital ?

Martine Ettori: First, let me say that I work alongside two physicians: a specialist haematologist myeloproliferative disorders and a cancer pharmacologist specialist breast. As assistant medical and social, my role is to make the interface between these two patients and doctors ... There are of course a very important administrative part: making appointments, keeping the calendar, schedules , phone calls, relationships with various stakeholders hospital and / or university etc.. But also an important human factor! This is also what I like most about this job, contact with patients.
Another very important mission: the drafting of reports of consultations.

Motivations

Natacha de Kalligo : Do you attend consultations?

Martine Ettori : Yes I have this chance! I attend a few years now . This is not always part of the duties of medical secretaries ... This makes the job more interesting work and it allows me to be closer to the patients, to put a face to a name and vice versa, because they know when to turn if there is a problem : I am their referent to physicians.I go even further today: the establishment in the box consultation dictation directly , allowing the patient to leave with his account . I have it for a computer, a specific program with pre- filled fields and a printer. I can write quickly and the report , have it signed by the end of the session with the doctor , saving valuable time and efficiency ! It took me some time to set up this project, but I did my best to get there with the help of my superiors who understood how important it was for the patient, which is important to me, and I am very pleased to have completed today.

The keys to success

Natacha de Kalligo : Is not it difficult to work for two doctors at the same time ?

 The keys to success
 The keys to success
Martine Ettori : This is a matter of organization and some of my colleagues have more than two doctors! I 'm very organized and I used to work with these doctors but it was not done in 5 minutes! We know we have learned over time to form real pairs. A relationship of trust is essential. For example, at the outset, my boss , cancer pharmacologist was not used to working with a secretary and I had to show him what I could bring him good for him to save time . When I started working with him , we had no office : I 'm busy ordering supplies through the maintenance management , mail archiving or ... The same thing happened with the hematologist who now takes the rest of my boss. Gradually I built a real secretariat ! Today, I 'll get back to patients who have a problem reading his mail, it is a summary and make him gain time for the response to . I know better and better the way it works and can get ahead without the need to tell me what to do . He readily admits that without me , he feels lost!

Relationship with patients

Natacha de Kalligo : Contact with patients seems to be the engine ...

Relationship with patients
Relationship with patients
Martine Ettori : Yes, absolutely , c'set essential for me . And I am in constant contact with patients because doctors are not always reachable . It is I who make over. When they call in case of trouble , I try by all means join the concerned doctor ( Smartphone is now a great resort! ) . The doctor sends me an email with its recommendations , and then I remember the patient. They know they can count on me. They know me well because I see in consultation , let them my card the first time, they call me by my first name and thus feel more confident . I make sure to always have an answer for them .Natacha de Kalligo : You work in the hospital for 33 years and you have the enthusiasm of a young beginner! What is your secret?Martine Ettori : I love what I do and I put a lot of energy to accomplish my mission . I'm a fairly reserved but I'm still going! I always full of ideas to improve the process , to change habits and be more efficient ( e) . And for that, I always had the chance to work with doctors who let me take the initiative and encouraged me to develop.I invested background and I also participate in internal log of the hospital as a member of the editorial board . I have a degree in communication in hospitals . At one time , I was also part of a privileged club in Paris that had brought me through a contest, to be voted " best medical secretary of France !" In short, my job is my passion!
